Lexi didn’t know how long she stayed in Ryder’s truck. She was tempted to remain there until Ryder had to forcibly drag her out like an errant kid.

Ryder also had redeeming qualities.

Lexi remembered burying herself in his blankets the night before. Ryder had given her his bed without complaint. That had been sweet of him.

She left the truck. As approached the cabin door, she heard a whistling noise from the kitchen. Lexi stepped inside.

“Ryder?” She called.

No answer. She found the bag of berries on the kitchen counter. Ryder had taken them out of the bag and poured them into a bowl.

Lexi peered out at the windows and saw him in the yard. Ryder didn’t have a shirt on. He was wielding an ax with expert precision.

Even though Lexi was supposed to be mad at him, she got all hot and bothered watching him. Lexi even plastered her face close to the glass to get a better look.

Sweat coated his powerful form. His muscles tensed with each swing. She swallowed, suddenly feeling warm.

Then he looked up and she swore he saw right into her. Ryder set his ax down. Lexi backed away from the window, embarrassed he caught her watching.

She busied herself in the kitchen. Lexi started taking out ingredients for a pie without realizing it.

She heard that whistling noise again. Ryder was back to chopping wood. She remembered the fireplace in the living room. So it wasn’t ornamental after all. It would be nice to get a fire going once winter arrived, assuming she’d still be here by then.

Wait.

Where were her thoughts going?

Lexi added the ingredients into a bowl to make some dough.

Lexi never baked so much or so often—which told her just how much this man was stressing the hell out of her.

She remembered a documentary about lions she watched before. The way the male lion stalked his potential mate reminded her of the way Ryder looked at her that morning.

Too bad Lexi wasn’t a lioness.

She’d been a pushover her entire life.

She let Cal take advantage of her. He’d been leeching off her for years. Lexi allowed it because she felt like she owed him for taking care of her while she was growing up.

Family was supposed to stick together.

Even at work, Lexi let her co-workers walk all over her. She’d take over an extra shift even though she was dead-tired. Lexi wanted everyone to like her.

Lexi let out all her frustrations as she rolled the dough.

“I’ll show you I have claws,” she muttered angrily to the empty kitchen. “I’m not a defenseless little rabbit you can put in a stew. I won’t let you devour me without a fight.”

Lexi didn’t know what the hell she was saying. She was just that mad.

“I hear you, sweetness.”

She spun on her heel, still holding her rolling pin like a weapon. “I didn’t even hear you come in.”

“I can be a silent hunter if I want to. You making us pie for dinner?”

“I’m still mad at you,” she said.

“I get that. I’ll go catch us some trout to eat.
